CHILDRENS CLIMATE RISK INDEX (UNICEF)

 The united nation international children emergency fund (UNICEF) has released a report titled "The climate crisis is a child right crisis : introducing the childrens climate risk index" in partnership with Friday for future . 


WHAT IS THE CHILDRENS CLIMATE RISK INDEX ? 

It assigns a ranking to nations based on their childrens exposure to climatic and environmental shocks , such as cyclone and heatwaves , as well as their sensitivity to those shocks , based on their availability to critical services.


Pakistan (14) , 

Bangladesh (15) , 

Afghanistan (25) ,

are four south Asian nation where children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change.


INDIA STATUS ON THE INDEX.

India is one of the four south Asian nation where children are most vulnerable to climate changes effects , which affect their health , education , and safety.


More than 600 million Indian are excepted to experience actual water shortage in the future year , while flash flooding is excepted to grow dramatically in the majority of Indians metropolitan region if global temperature climb over 2 degrees Celsius.



  • YOUTH IN THE CENTRAL AFRICAN COUNTRIES ARE PARTICULARLY VULNERABLE TO CLIMATE CHANGES EFFECTS

These children are at risk from a fetal mix of numerous climate and environmental shocks , as well as a high level of vulnerability owing to a lack of basic services such as water and cleanliness , health , and literacy.

IMPACT OF CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS ON CHILDREN.

Coastal flooding , riverine , flooding , cyclone , vector-borne diseases , lead pollution , heatwave , and water scarcity are all climate and environmental risk that threaten nearly every kid on the planet.

850 million children , or one in every three children globally , live in places where at least four of these climatic and environmental shocks are present.

KEY FINDINGS OF THE REPORT.
  • 240 million children are highly exposed to coastal flooding.
  • 330 million children are highly exposed to riverine flooding.
  • 400 million children are highly exposed to cyclone.
  • 600 million children are highly exposed to vector borne diseases.
  • 815 million children are highly exposed to lead pollution.
  • 820 million children are highly exposed to heatwave.
  • 920 million children are highly exposed to water scarcity.
  • 1 billion children are highly exposed to exceeding high level of air pollution.

WHAT ARE THE RECOMMENDATIONS GIVEN BY THE REPORT?

Invest more in climate adaptation and resilience in critical children services.
To keep global warming at 1.5 degree celsius , countries must reduce emission by at least 45% by by 2030.
provide climate education and environmental skills to children , which are essential for their adaptation to and preparation for the consequences of climate change.
